Rödkallen

Far out to sea, in the outer limits of the
Luleå Archipelago you will find Rödkallen Island, the last outpost
before crossing the gulf to Finland. For many years the island has
housed a pilot station and there is also a fishing village.
In 1872 a Heidenstam-type lighthouse was built on the island.
It was taken out of service 100 years later and is today classed
as a historical monument. The Heidenstam lighthouse on Rödkallen
Island is one of the few remaining of its type in Sweden
Parts of Rödkallen Island are included the Rödkallen - Sörespen
Nature Reserve. Visiting boats can tie up at the old pilot station
harbour; be careful when approaching the harbour. There is a
newly opened family hotel on the island, the Lighthouse Hotel (Fyrhotellet).
