Småskär

Bullerhamnsviken
In the 17th century the townsmen of Luleå
started fishing in the waters around Småskär Island. In 1652 Queen
Kristina granted Småskär Island to the newly founded town of Luleå
(1651). In the 1720s a chapel was built on the island, in fact the
first chapel to be built in the Luleå Archipelago. It was built in
the bay that came to be known as Chapel Bay (Kyrkviken).
The original fishing village was also most probably situated in
this bay; today, due to land rise, the old fishermen’s huts are
quite a distance from the shore. Inscriptions on some of them date
back to the 18th century.

On Småskär, you will find numerous bays, old forests, flat rock
slabs, tarns and other interesting landscape features. There are
about 90 summer cottages on the island, most of them in
Bullerhamnsviken, Bolinsviken and in the area around Chapel Bay.
Just next to Småskär Island you will find the islands of Klyvan
and Finnskär. In Bullerhamnsviken there is a public jetty, a
cabin for rent and a sauna. Please contact the Luleå Tourism
Office if you would like to rent the cabin, see below for the
phone number.
Across the bay is a hut belonging to the Luleå Scouts, and this
is converted into a youth hostel in the summer. During the
summer, you can sail to Småskär on M/S Ronja or M/S Laponia.
Worth seeing: The countryside, the chapel, the fishermen's huts
and the cottages in Kyrkviken (Chapel Bay). |
