Winter in the
archipelago

A winter trip into the Archipelago is very different from a
summer one. In the winter there are huge white open spaces for
skiing, ice yachting and tours by dogsled. And there are a number
of establishments out in the Archipelago that specialize in good
food and exciting activities.

Snowmobile safaris
 Snowmobiles and the
Archipelago are a perfect match. You can travel for kilometres
without meeting a soul, close to nature in its frosty coat. Go on
a safari with your family and friends, and experience winter
together. Stop for a break and enjoy your picnic or pay a visit to
one of the Archipelago restaurants.
When the ice has reached a suitable thickness, the Department of
Recreation clears and signs snowmobile trails around the
Archipelago. There are maps available at the Luleå Tourism Office.
Canoeing and kayaking
 When the ice starts
melting in the outer reaches of the Archipelago it’s the perfect
time to go canoeing or kayaking and see the great blocks of
pack-ice from close up. Take a trip on a sunny day and you could
almost imagine yourself somewhere in the Arctic as you are, in
fact, surrounded by icebergs and cold blue water.
